Below: prices by carat, why a black diamond costs less than a white one, what moves the price, and how to tell when a price is too good to be true.
How much does a black diamond ring cost? Prices by carat
We looked at every black diamond engagement ring in our Black Ice collection (127 rings, all set with natural black diamonds) and grouped them by the weight of the center stone. Prices are the usual price of each ring, in USD, October 2026.
| Center black diamond | Rings from | Most rings cost | Example |
|---|---|---|---|
| Under 1 carat | $850 | $850 to $3,500 | Lyra bezel pear |
| About 1 carat | $1,700 | about $1,800 | Alma Negra cluster |
| 1.3 to 1.8 carats | $1,600 | about $2,150 | Eridanus emerald cut |
| About 2 carats | $1,500 | about $2,550 | Curva Scura bezel marquise |
| 2.5 to 3.5 carats | $2,000 | about $2,800 | Gravastar black and white |
| 3.5 carats and up | $2,800 | about $4,200 | Night Crawler bezel oval |
| Wedding bands | $600 | about $1,200 | Black diamond wedding bands |
One thing stands out: the carat weight matters less than you might expect. A 2.22 carat marquise in a simple bezel costs less than many 1 carat rings with clusters, halos or side stones. With black diamonds, the setting often decides the price.
How much does a 1 carat black diamond engagement ring cost?
In our collection, a ring with a 1 carat natural black diamond center costs about $1,700 to $1,900: for example the Alma Negra cluster ring or the Dark Necessities oval ring. For a smaller budget, a 0.75 carat pear in a bezel, the Lyra ring, starts around $850.
A tip from the bench: black diamonds are often cut deeper than white ones, so ask for the stone's size in millimeters, not only its weight. Two 1 carat black diamonds can look quite different on the hand.
Why does a black diamond cost less than a white diamond?
Because of what it starts as. A white diamond is priced on its cut, color, clarity and carat, and a clean, colorless stone is scarce. Most black diamonds in jewelry, including ours, start as natural diamonds full of inclusions. Their color is enhanced with heat and pressure until the whole stone is an even, deep black. The result is a natural, earth-mined diamond, as hard as any other, at a fraction of the price of a white diamond of the same size. On every one of ours, the enhancement is written on the certificate.
To compare with our own white diamonds: Evening Light, a 2 carat white diamond ring, costs about three times as much as a typical 2 carat black diamond ring. More on the differences: black diamond vs white diamond.
Why are some black diamonds expensive?
A diamond that came out of the ground fully black, with no treatment, is rare, and it is priced as a rarity. So is carbonado, a porous black diamond found mainly in Brazil and Central Africa. Those stones can cost many times more than a color enhanced black diamond of the same size. If a seller asks a "natural fancy black" price, ask for a lab report that says the color is natural. More in natural vs color-enhanced black diamonds: what the certificate tells you.
What makes one black diamond ring cost more than another?
- The setting. Halos, pave bands, two-stone and three-stone designs add diamonds and hours at the bench. Pluto's Moons, two 2 carat pears side by side, costs more than a single 2 carat stone in a bezel.
- White diamonds in the design. Black and white rings set white diamonds around or beside the black, and white diamonds cost more per carat.
- Size of the center stone. It counts, but less than in white diamonds.
- Design and handwork. A sculpted piece can cost more than its stones suggest. Our REMNANT rings, with gold seams inspired by kintsugi, are priced for the work as much as for the diamond.
- Quality of the black diamond. Even color with no gray or brown patches, a mirror-like polish, and clean facet edges.
Cheap black diamond ring: when is a price too good to be true?
A common worry: a ring keeps showing up in social media ads, the photos look perfect, and the price looks too low. Before you buy, check five things:
- The stone's name. The listing should say "natural diamond", not "black CZ", "onyx", "spinel" or "black stone" in the details.
- The carat weight. A real listing gives the weight of the center stone and of the side stones.
- The certificate. It should come with the ring and state any treatment. Ours state the color enhancement.
- The metal. The listing should name the gold, such as 14K, and solid gold is normally stamped inside the band (14K or 585). Plated metal is what turns a finger green after a week.
- The photos and the people. The same ring in every photo, not stock images; reviews that sound like real people; and a person you can talk to before you pay.

Bigger for less: is a bigger black diamond worth it?
Because black diamonds cost less per carat, it is tempting to go big, and some people later feel they asked for too much diamond. A black diamond can also look bolder on the hand than a white one of the same size, because the eye sees one solid, dark shape. On a small hand, a 2 carat black diamond is already a statement. A large stone also sits higher, so for the first months you may knock it on doors and counters; have the prongs checked from time to time, or choose a low bezel setting that wraps the stone in gold. If you can, compare sizes on your own hand before you choose, or talk it through with a real person in a free online consultation, and pick the one you will love wearing on an ordinary Tuesday.
Is a black diamond ring worth it, or just a trend?
The people who still love their black diamond ring years later chose it for a reason, not for a season: a ring that holds light and dark together, a love that has known hard times, a piece that speaks before you do. If that is you, it is worth it at any price on this page. If you are only following a trend, a classic white diamond may serve you better. Black diamond ring cost: FAQ
How much does a 1 carat black diamond engagement ring cost?
At Diana Rafael, a ring with a 1 carat natural black diamond center costs about $1,700 to $1,900 in most settings (October 2026). Elsewhere, expect a similar range for a color enhanced natural black diamond; a naturally black, untreated stone costs more.
Are black diamonds cheaper than white diamonds?
Usually, yes. Most black diamonds in jewelry are natural diamonds whose color has been enhanced, and they cost a fraction of a white diamond of the same size. Our 2 carat white diamond ring costs about three times as much as a typical 2 carat black diamond ring.
Why are some black diamonds expensive?
A diamond that is black by nature, with no treatment, is rare and priced higher. Large stones, very even color, a high polish, and settings with many small diamonds also raise the price.
How much is a black diamond worth per carat?
There is no official price list for black diamonds, as there is for white diamonds. Value depends on whether the color is natural or enhanced, how even the color is, and how well the stone is cut and polished. Buy one for how it looks and what it means to you, not as an investment.
How can I tell if a cheap black diamond ring is fake?
Ask for the certificate. It should name the stone as a natural diamond and state any treatment. Be careful with listings that use stock photos, give no carat weight, or call the stone black CZ, onyx or spinel in the small print.
How much does a black diamond wedding band cost?
Our black diamond wedding bands start at about $600, and most cost around $1,200. Bands set with more or larger diamonds cost more.
Do black diamond rings hold their value?
A color enhanced black diamond has a low resale value, like most jewelry. Its value is in wearing it: a natural diamond, 10 on the Mohs hardness scale, made to be worn every day for decades.
